Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT)

The Strip Procedure

FUT hair transplant technique is one of the first methods of hair transplantation developed by specialists in hair and scalp disorders. This technique has been the most practiced worldwide, and our highly experienced hair transplant surgeons in Mexico make this procedure available to successfully recover what baldness has taken away.

At Hair Center Mexico we are aware that alopecia is a hair health problem suffered by both men and women. People dealing with hair loss issues may feel unattractive and even look much older than their actual age, resulting in changes in their lifestyle and personality.

What is the FUT Hair Transplant Method?

Follicular Unit Transplant technique, also known as FUSS (Follicular Unit Strip Surgery), is one of the hair implantation methods used in patients suffering from significant hair loss. The procedure involves the extraction of a strip of skin from the donor area (normally from the back or sides of the scalp). Then, hair follicles are harvested and carefully dissected to obtain the necessary grafts to be transplanted into the balding areas.

* The intervention time may vary depending on each patient.

FUT Hair Transplant Process

  1. Evaluation of donor area and balding areas
he surgeon will study the areas affected by hair loss to determine the number of grafts needed and decide which is the best donor site to remove the strip of scalp skin.
  2. Photographs
Pictures are taken by medical team for documentation and postoperative analyses of results
  3. Scalp strip removal
After the application of local anesthesia in the donor region, the surgeon will make an incision with the help of a scalpel to remove the strip of skin. The strip usually doesn’t exceed 0.4 inches (1 centimeter) wide, and the incision is about 4-9 inches (12-23 cm) long, that is almost from ear to ear.
  4. Donor area stitching
The surgeon stitches up the incision site leaving a fine linear scar, which can be easily covered as the hair grows.
  5. Graft dissection
Once the strip of hair is removed and the donor area is stitched up, the surgeon will then proceed with the extraction of the follicular units (or grafts) to eventually redistribute them into the affected areas

The procedure takes about 4 to 6 hours to carefully extract and transplant a total of 1,200 to 1,500 grafts (about 3,000 to 5,000 hairs). It is also important to follow the surgeon's indications, as after the intervention it is possible to experience tension and swelling in the treated areas. The small crusts formed will disappear in 8-10 days and the final results are visible 8-12 months after the intervention.
